Yarrow is best known for its ability to stop bleeding and heal skin wounds. Historically, the leaves are chewed up and then used as a poultice on top of wounds to help stop bleeding. Modern science has confirmed many of Yarrow’s traditional medicinal properties. Its healing ability comes mostly from the alkaloid achilleine, which helps wounds heal over by encouraging blood clotting.  

Its Latin name, Achillea millefolium, has its roots in the legend of it being the healing herb of Achilles. According to Greek myth, there was an herb with such potent healing properties that the hero Achilles used it to treat the wounds of his soldiers. Today, historians and botanists agree that the herb described in Homer’s Iliad was Yarrow. 

Yarrow flowers and leaves are traditionally used in the treatment of slow healing wounds. Yarrow oil or salve is applied on the skin to treat irritations, rashes, cuts and scrapes while preventing infection and helping them to heal faster without scarring. The fresh herb is often used to make salves since it contains volatile oils and resins that repair tissues and have an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect. Yarrow has also been found to cut down on pain in abrasions.

This is a salve made with fresh local wildcrafted Yarrow. The flowers and leaves of the plant are allowed to infuse the organic extra virgin olive oil with their properties.  

Our salves follow the Greek home remedy tradition of the olive oil-beeswax salve that the lady of the house used to make and keep handy in the home as an all-purpose healing salve. The olive oil nourishes and heals and the beeswax helps to create a barrier that locks in moisture.
