St. John's Wort is a traditional herb that has been used for hundreds of years. Known in Greece to this day as "Spatholado" (sword oil), the oil infused with St. John's Wort, which bears a characteristic deep red color, is said to have been used in ancient times to heal sword wounds suffered by soldiers in battle.
In folk medicine, St. John’s Wort is used as a wound healing agent and nerve agent. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, contracting, antispasmodic and digestive effects. Especially the oil of St. John’s Wort is famous in medicine.
The 16th century physician Paracelcus not only used St. John’s Wort internally, but also made amulets with it, mainly to target demonic influences. He said: “This herb should always be carried under the beret (flat head cover), at the bosom as a wreath, or otherwise carried in the hands. One should often smell at it, put it under the pillow during the night, stick it around the house or hang it on the walls.” As an amulet worn around the neck, it is supposed to inspire love and favor. “The doctor should know that God has put a great arcanum into the herb, for St. John’s Wort is a universal medicine for the whole human being."
Our salve is made with St. John's Wort oil produced with local wildcrafted freshly picked North Idaho flowers.
